BCLAC KL provides accessible legal guidance and assistance to members of the public, particularly individuals who may not be able to afford private legal representation.

Free legal advice and consultation are provided at the advisory stage. Where a matter qualifies for legal aid and is taken up by a volunteer lawyer, disbursements up to RM500, court filing fees, and any miscellaneous fees depending on the needs of the case may still apply.

Determination of Eligibility

Eligibility for legal aid assistance will be assessed based on a means test. As a general guideline, assistance is typically provided to individuals whose monthly income (after deduction of monthly commitments) does not exceed RM800.00 for a single person or RM1,000.00 for a married couple. However, eligibility may still be considered on a case-to-case basis depending on the circumstances of the individual.

Upon arrival, our reception will assist you with the registration process and determine your area of law.

A representative will be assigned to you to conduct the interview session.

Preparing For Your Visit

You are required to bring any relevant documents to your matter to help us assess and advise you more effectively. These may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Notes:

To ease the interview session, you are encouraged to prepare a chronology of events before coming to us. The chronology should include the parties involved, when the issue started and its subsequent dates to establish a timeline for the events.

In situations of urgency i.e. arrest, upcoming domestic inquiry, upcoming court date, please come to our Centre as soon as possible for an interview session.

You may still come to our Centre even if you do not have the complete set of documents.

Bar Council Legal Aid Centre Kuala Lumpur provides legal advice, guidance, and where appropriate, legal representation to the members of the public. We are committed to helping individuals’ access legal support, particularly those who may not have the means to engage private legal services.
The Centre is open to all members of the public, including both Malaysians and non-Malaysians, who are seeking legal advice or assistance.
We welcome walk-ins and operate on a first come, first served basis. Our Centre is open from Monday to Friday, 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, excluding public holidays.
We are located at Level 3, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia. The nearest LRT/MRT station is Masjid Jamek/Pasar Seni followed by a 10 minutes walk to Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia. You may approach us for advice on various areas of law. However, please note that our assistance is generally confined to preliminary guidance, including referrals, explanations of the law, procedural information, and other initial steps.
Yes. You do not need to know the legal terminology or exact legal category of your issue. You may simply describe your situation in your own words, and we will assist you in identifying the relevant legal issue and provide appropriate guidance.
You are encouraged to bring all relevant documents in hardcopy to help us better understand your situation and provide appropriate advice. This may include your identity card, court papers, police reports, letters, agreements, messages, screenshots, photographs, or any other documents related to your matter.
You are still welcome to visit to the Centre for legal advice. If additional documents are required for us to properly, assess your matter, we may advise you to return for a further consultation once those documents have been obtained.
We strive to communicate legal advice clearly and effectively. We will aim to guide you through the relevant issues, your available options, and the next steps so that you can make informed decisions about your matter.

You may come on behalf of a family member or friend for general guidance. However, where possible, we strongly encourage the person directly involved to be present, as this helps ensure we obtain accurate information and provide advice that is more effective.
Please do not ignore court papers, summonses, or legal notices. Check the dates stated in the documents carefully and come to the Centre as soon as possible with the relevant documents so that we may advise you on the appropriate next steps.

A consultation session can take between 60 – 90 minutes depending on the complexity of the matter. Opening a file may take approximately 4 – 8 weeks depending on the stage of the case, the availability of documents, the next court date, and any other relevant factors.
