Bar Council Legal Aid Centre Kuala Lumpur provides legal advice, guidance, and where appropriate, legal representation to the members of the public. We are committed to helping individuals’ access legal support, particularly those who may not have the means to engage private legal services.
2. Who can visit BCLAC KL?
The Centre is open to all members of the public, including both Malaysians and non-Malaysians, who are seeking legal advice or assistance.
3. Do I need to make an appointment or can I visit on a walk-in basis?
We welcome walk-ins and operate on a first come, first served basis. Our Centre is open from Monday to Friday, 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, excluding public holidays.

We are located at Level 3, Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia. The nearest LRT/MRT station is Masjid Jamek/Pasar Seni followed by a 10 minutes walk to Wisma Badan Peguam Malaysia. 5. What kind of legal matters can I seek help for?
You may approach us for advice on various areas of law. However, please note that our assistance is generally confined to preliminary guidance, including referrals, explanations of the law, procedural information, and other initial steps.
6. Can I visit even if I do not know what type of legal problem I have?
Yes. You do not need to know the legal terminology or exact legal category of your issue. You may simply describe your situation in your own words, and we will assist you in identifying the relevant legal issue and provide appropriate guidance.
7. What documents should I bring with me?
You are encouraged to bring all relevant documents in hardcopy to help us better understand your situation and provide appropriate advice. This may include your identity card, court papers, police reports, letters, agreements, messages, screenshots, photographs, or any other documents related to your matter.
8. What if I do not have all my documents yet?
You are still welcome to visit to the Centre for legal advice. If additional documents are required for us to properly, assess your matter, we may advise you to return for a further consultation once those documents have been obtained.
9. How will my legal matter be explained to me?
We strive to communicate legal advice clearly and effectively. We will aim to guide you through the relevant issues, your available options, and the next steps so that you can make informed decisions about your matter.
10. Can the BCLAC KL represent me in Court?
If you meet the eligibility criteria and pass the means test, your case may be assigned to a volunteer lawyer, who is willing to assist, subject to availability, to handle your matter.
11. Is the legal service free?
Free legal advice and consultation are provided at the advisory stage. Where a matter qualifies for legal aid and is taken up by a volunteer lawyer, disbursements up to RM500.00, court filing fees, and any miscellaneous fees depending on the needs of the case may still apply.
12. Can I come on behalf of a family member or friend?
You may come on behalf of a family member or friend for general guidance. However, where possible, we strongly encourage the person directly involved to be present, as this helps ensure we obtain accurate information and provide advice that is more effective.
13. What if I have already received court papers, a summons, or a legal notice?
Please do not ignore court papers, summonses, or legal notices. Check the dates stated in the documents carefully and come to the Centre as soon as possible with the relevant documents so that we may advise you on the appropriate next steps.

If your matter is outside our scope of services, we will provide details of other specialist advice agencies and/or authorities, where possible, and provide you with any practical advice and assistance.

16. How long will the process take?
A consultation session can take between 60 – 90 minutes depending on the complexity of the matter. Opening a file may take approximately 4 – 8 weeks depending on the stage of the case, the availability of documents, the next court date, and any other relevant factors.
17. What is a means test?
A means test is an assessment to see whether you meet the financial criteria for legal aid representation. As a general guideline, assistance is typically provided to individuals whose monthly income (after deduction of monthly commitments) does not exceed RM800.00 for a single person or RM1,000.00 for a married couple. However, eligibility may still be considered on a case-to-case basis depending on the circumstances of the individual.
18. What language can I speak at BCLAC KL?
We will do our best to accommodate your preferred language, subject to the availability of the pupils on duty. The primary working languages are Bahasa Malaysia and English.
